Athina '90 has concluded their Futsal Cup experience with another convincing presence at Azerbaijan. The Greek side returns with 2 defeats and one win, with an overall excellent record that marks their best ever placing in European competitions.
Athina started off their Elite round games with a tough 3-2 loss against hosts Kairat Almaty. Mpousmpouras scored at the 2nd min to get the Greeks to a great start. Leo tied it at the 19th min for Kairat, yet at the start of the second half Artinos got Athina back on top. The 28th min was critical though as Leo and Guga got two goals to get the hosts to lead the game all the way to the end. On day 2, Athina's players could not surpass fatigue and exhaustion and suffered a 7-0 loss to the Araz Naxcivan side. On Sunday Athina 90 posted the first ever win at such a progressed round, beating Nikars Riga 3-0. Begaj, Mpouspouras tallied one each while Zolotuhins had an own goal.
report from UEFA.com
Kairat Almaty have been in the last two final tournaments but group hosts Araz confirmed the best run by an Azerbaijani club in any UEFA competition. Thiago Rodrigues and Vitaliy Borisov scored in the first nine minutes for Araz, who needed only a draw thanks to their superior goal difference. Tigrinho pulled one back and although Rodrigues restored the two-goal cushion, Katata and Guga scored in the last minute of the first half to send Kairat in level. However, it was Araz who moved ahead just past the half-hour through Santos's double penalty and Kairat had Anderson sent off with seven minutes left as the home side emulated Azerbaijan's qualification for January's UEFA European Futsal Championship. Athina '90 Athens finished third with a 3-0 win against the only team to progress this far from the Preliminary round, FK Nikars Riga |
